Battlefield 6's Relaxed Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times

Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a fresh game mode called Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but features several key adjustments:

  • Every squad includes just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
  • Activities performed by real players award complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
  • Only two locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Features like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates have been turned off.

So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for players seeking alternative ways to enjoy the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 fans are mad.

Player Reactions: Anger to Praise

"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," states a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and another lists everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

However, amid the criticism, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game all the time. Let them find a middle ground," adds another. A response via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Concerns and Player Input

All that said, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase queue times even longer for other modes because of the large amount of options currently available. On a similar note, certain regions already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a minimum number of real players, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Lastly, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community meeting them in the middle, as per forum feedback. A different user labels this addition as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
