California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is facing drought conditions. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and strained its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is clear of any level of drought. This change was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes well above their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status featured powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and tragic losses. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

But, experts warn that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials have emphasized that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
