Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their release of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in military or defense capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to defend and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Furious Reaction

The video message reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he declared: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders React

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a joint declaration condemning the remarks.

"Political violence has no place in America," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these unhinged digital publications and recant his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the announcement stated.

Representatives' Defiant Response

The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a response.

"We serve as veterans and security experts who care for this nation and took an vow to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."

Further Governmental Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."

The GOP official also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative stated. "There are current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
