Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
