Israeli citizens mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks advance
Israelis have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.
A senior delegate involved in the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis want the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the night falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported additional victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
