NY Launches Portal for Public to Share Immigration Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state attorney general has rolled out a fresh digital platform asking residents to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This action comes just a day after a significant enforcement action shook Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking mass demonstrations.

American Citizens Held During Enforcement Action

A US congressman announced during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Each citizen has the right to live without fear," state officials stated in a statement.

"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity yesterday, I encourage you to submit that material with us. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The portal provides spaces to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a section to indicate location information. Prior to sending, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "authorities may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The enforcement action, which observers say involved more than 50 federal agents, occurred in a popular area of Manhattan where counterfeit products and other goods are commonly traded en masse – frequently to tourists.

Footage of the incident show multiple masked and armed personnel zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away witnesses. Crowds of locals trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was also seen traveling down the city streets.

Official Reactions

At a midweek briefing organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He said the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the troops to prevent conflict that they initiated."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the ICE raid escalated – each of the political contenders condemned the operation, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," a political candidate declared.

NYC advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.

"Federal officers raided Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to target small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to public safety and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," remarked the leader of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

ICE policy prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it refrains from arrest or detain citizens. However, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in New York and across the US recently.

A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread including claims of violence and abusive practices.

Most recently, a letter submitted by legal entities alleged inadequate care of pregnant women in government custody.
