Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He fought the legal system and the law won.
Sixty days after being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.
Expected Imprisonment
The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under residential detention in his estate while a number of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, during increasing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.
Past Comments on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited little mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“Why should we provide these dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”
Prison Facility Debate
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week visited the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut problems – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the last political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of jail cuisine.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells holding four dozen detainees: “It's practically one meter squared per prisoner.
“We spoke to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
Backers Speak Out
He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated incarceration.
Writing in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the biggest wrong in its past”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the souls of many people in Brazil,” he stated.
Divided General Opinion
It is possibly correct given the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. However his expected jailing has also gladdened the hearts of many individuals who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to prevent the incoming president from becoming president – and even scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current president's political party, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive dignified treatment – but proper treatment behind bars. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have long celebrating the tough handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.
“The former president is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting conduct”.
Likely Prison Conditions
Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 inmates, his more likely location looks to be a close penitentiary for police officers and other “special” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular official residence, approximately 20 kilometers away.
According to information, the room Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – about the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a set and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” sources suggested.
Partisan Comments
Senator Lucas condemned the speculated plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
