Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
