While Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Popular Picture Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many others in the area, detected pops ringing out through the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He’s running into something that certainly every instinct would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and medical teams caring for numerous those hurt.
