Zohran Mamdani states plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
